Reliving the Joy: Jamaica Independence Celebration 2024 on Vancouver Island

On Sunday, August 4, 2024, Jamaicans on Vancouver Island Canadian Services Society (JOVISS) hosted a spectacular Jamaica Independence Celebration, marking 62 years since Jamaica achieved independence. This event brought together community members and special guests to honor Jamaica’s rich history and culture, right here on Vancouver Island.


A Momentous Occasion

The celebration was elevated by the presence of the Mayor of Victoria, who shared heartfelt remarks about the importance of diversity and cultural heritage in shaping a thriving community. Mayor Marianne Alto commended the Jamaican community for its contributions to the city and expressed enthusiasm for events that celebrate multiculturalism.

Adding to the occasion was a recorded speech from the Jamaican Consulate, which highlighted the enduring connection between Jamaica and its diaspora. The consulate’s message reflected on the resilience and achievements of Jamaicans worldwide and underscored the theme of unity, pride, and progress.


A Celebration of Culture and Unity

The day was a lively showcase of Jamaican culture, music provided by DJ AbeLee, and authentic cuisine by Hazel, Our host Alicia creating an atmosphere that transported attendees to the heart of the Caribbean.

  • Live Music and Performances: Our dj filled the air with Jamaica’s iconic rhythms. Traditional dancers added an authentic touch, captivating the audience.

  • Authentic Jamaican Cuisine: Guests savored dishes like jerk chicken, jerk pork, curried goat, and oxtail. The flavors were a delightful reminder of Jamaica’s culinary traditions.

  • Cultural Displays: From storytelling to craft exhibits, attendees had the chance to immerse themselves in Jamaican history and artistry.


A Family-Friendly Affair

The celebration wasn’t just for adults; the children’s corner was alive with activities like craft, and games. Families enjoyed a day of laughter, learning, and connection.
